I just got back from vacation so some of this might be re-hash of what's
been said.

Martha Nussbaum is asking for an ethical criteria--not an epistemological
foundation. She seems to think that it is the universal intellectual's job
to lead the masses towards the Lofty and the Beautiful (see Kant).
