I am early into reading Foucault, and I am currently working through
McKinlay and Starkey , Foucault, Management and Organisation Theory. I am
preparing for writing my literature review and am reading around power and
organisation. I work in the field of organisational development specifically
within the field of substance misuse and I am researching how managers
manage the demands of delivery to service users and Government. Because the
organisations are predominantly funded by public monies, there is the
constant pressure on managers to deliver to national targets which is
interesting as the targets are not necessarily focused on delivering the
best services for service users.
So I am on a journey and am beginning to become fascinated with where
Foucault was coming from with his writings and how these may inform the
research I am undertaking...........................
By the way your call centre environment sounds fascinating and have you read
George Ritzer - McDonaldisation........again fascinating when we look at
control, power and surveillance, how much McDonalds and technology has
influenced Organisational Development

I work in the quality department at a call center. We recently purchased a
program that records all the calls, records screenshots and otherwise
watching our phone agents very carefully.
The role of surveillance within companies is a compelling realm of study.
With government surveillance, there seems to be much more resistance. It
seems to me that privacy is not a concern in the workplace. I've joked with
friends about how panoptic my work is and I've seen its effects. You should
see the strange and daring ways the phone agents try to avoid the panoptic
eye of our quality department.
As far as management and Foucault, I've felt there is a creepy prescriptive
element to Foucault's description of Dispciplinary power, especially when
I'm at work meetings. What kind of organizational theories are you studying
in regards to Foucault's work?
