In addition to reading Discipline and Punish--you may also take a look at the following:

Ian Hunter's book "Rethinking schools"
Lisa Hennon's work on school architecture

and I wrote a dissertation completing a genealogy of portfolio assessment--focusing on the state of Kentucky.
