In his Preface to 'AntiOedipus' Foucault states that activists don't have
to be sad. He does else where call for an active pessimism (I can't
remeber which essay), but then this could also be balance against his
more creative impulses in his later writings on the construction of an
aesthetics of existence and an ethics of care of the self.
