Members of the Satyagraha (truth-grasping) movement founded by Gandhi
offered no resistance when British Army troops broke up demonstrations
with considerable violence. Several of these troops later refused to use
violence against such protesters, or became demoralized.
This is not to suggest that the protesters were using _rational_ methods
of argument, but to point out that there are other alternatives than
reason and violence (the classical 'binary opposition' of Western
political thought).
I can't remember where I got the above historical anecdote (which
certainly has a rhetorical effect to make within this discourse) but
perhaps someone else can confirm.
