Hermeneutique du sujet

Some of you may be aware that another of Foucault's lecture courses, L'
Hermeneutique du sujet: Cours au college de France (1981-1982) is due
to appear at the end of this month (thanks Denoix for alerting me that
it was this imminent).

I was wondering if there were any other people who would be interested
in doing a reading via the list, or privately if people though it would
be of limited appeal, of the course. I was thinking of maybe one
lecture a week/fortnight or so. Maybe I could send a short summary of
the lecture to start discussion?

The course - from the summary in Resume des cours/Dits et ecrits -
looks most closely linked to the material that appeared in vols 2 and 3
of the History of Sexuality series. However, I've found from Les
Anormaux and <<Il faut defendre la societe>> that the courses tend
include a great deal of surprises - things not mentioned elsewhere in
his work, thinking on his feet, interesting theoretical elaborations,
etc. I'm hoping that here there will be some material that discusses
the Christian understanding of confession that would have been in the
4th volume (though it seems the previous year's course is much more
extensive on this issue).

Whilst I wouldn't want to exclude anyone, I wouldn't be interested in
people picking up on one line from a mail that maybe was a summary
elaboration of a complex idea, and running off at tangents or
descending into personal abuse, ill-thought out comments, etc. Rather,
it would be interesting to think with others on this course. That of
course, requires reading it in French. With the previous two published
I've done a lot of work on them, but pretty much in isolation (though
thanks Clare for some interesting discussions of Les Anormaux).
Discussing Foucault's ideas in a forum, and sharing other's thoughts
would seem to me, at least, to be an appealing prospect.

If you're interested, please let me know. The book is available from
www.fnac.com or www.amazon.fr - Amazon lets you pre-order, with Fnac it
seems you have to wait until it appears. One minor point is that the
publication date is listed as 8 days earlier with Fnac; it's either the
15th or 23rd of February.

Best wishes

Stuart
