there's some quite interesting stuff on individualism that i have not
seen mentioned: shanahan's _genealogy of indidvidualism_ ,
nikolas rose' _governing the soul_ come immediately to mind, and hacking's
new book _writing the soul_ may be a good choice. there's also a very
substantial anthrpological literature on individualism and self-fashioning
which offers a useful corrective to the generally naive philosophical
literature. brian morris just published a summary book whose title i
cannot recall offhand, and carrithers' collection is quite excellent.
erving goffman's works would be fascinating to play off against nietzsche,
of course, but that may be too far afield.
