I would like to thank everyone who posted those useful references.
Regarding Foucault on media, I would suggest _The Politics of Everyday
Fear_, edited by Brian Massumi, Minnesota UP, 1993. The book has its ups
and downs, but there are some good essays on the media. For a more rigorous
philosophical approach, I would suggest Deleuze's book on Foucault,
particularly the discussion of phenomenology and Heidegger and "visibility."
(I don't have the page numbers handy. Just look under "Heidegger" in the
index.)
