Y'all:
Yes, it does seem that Donzelot picks up nicely where Foucault left off on the
question of the family. Though it would seem to me that the fundamental elements of
a genealogy of the family are missing from hist of sex I. maybe it is fair to say
that by the time of HS Foucault has returned to an analysis of discourse and
abandoned the spacial/ethnographic aspects developed in D&P. There may be good
reasons for this, given his developing interest in ethics, which come to the fore in
the second two volumes. But a genealogy of the family would seem to require a closer
analysis of the spacialization of the home, a broader historical/economic analysis
fo the family and capitalism, stuff like that. Donzelot is perfect for filling in
this gap. hopefully in the next few days (if I follow my writing schedule) I will
post a more coherent summary of this problem moving from D&P to HSI. Simon's remark
about Foucault not fulfulling a promise made in D&P to pursue the question of the
family is quite useful. I'll hunt it down.
Thanks, and stay tuned.
