CHAIR OF SOCIOLOGY
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POST
To provide academic and administrative leadership to the Division of
Sociology and Social Policy.
POSITION IN THE UNIVERSITY
Report to the Head of Department of Social Sciences.
MAIN DUTIES
- lead, motivate and manage a team of academic research staff
- establish academic objectives and plan, estimate and secure the
resources necessary to achieve these objectives
- provide leadership to the staff in the conduct of research and
income generation
- participate in teaching, assessment and curriculum development as
appropriate
- pursue personal research and scholarly activities
- represent the division within the Department and the University
Committee System and Chair the
division meetings
- contribute to the overall management of the University by active
participation in one or more of the University and Departmental Committees
- represent the interests of the division in contacts with other
Universities and external bodies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
The post requires a well qualified academic with significant achievements
in degree development, teaching and research. Administrative skills and
experience of managing staff are also important.
The successful candidate will be expected to lead a team of academics and
research staff and to operate within the University System of "expert"
Committees. In addition, the successful candidate will be familiar with
systems of validating, funding and evaluating the work of an academic
Department.
No specific area of expertise in Sociology is required other than the fact
that the successful candidate will be expected to support and complement
existing academic strengths.
Under current and proposed funding arrangements for higher education, an
active approach is necessary to identify funding opportunities and to
develop and deliver such opportunities as they arise.
As a term of employment, staff may be required to undertake such other
duties and/or hors of work as may be required to meet the needs and
exigencies of the University.
