While I agree with much of what John Knoblock has stated regarding
Foucault, I would like to make the following points:
1. In 1979, my dermatologist at St. Francis Medical Center stated
that something was wrong; that people were getting ill and dying.
Further, he stated that at that time they thought it was related
to drug use.
2. While it is true that foucault lectured in Berkeley in the spring
of 1983, specifically in April and May, he also returned to Berkeley
in October and November. He also lectured in February and March
1984. Not the dark, ominous sort of individual that Miller attempts
to paint in his work, but one, whom I believe, was going through
another change/break in his thought.
3. There is a tendency to confuse Miller's biography with fact. We
need to look at Miller's uncritical use of his sources, such as White's
travelogues. Further, Miller's sloppy scholarship needs to be addressed
in a much larger forum.
