FYI,=20

I received a message from a friend on mine who is a specialist on =
Sociology of Genetics. I had asked her the same question that I posted =
to the list a few days back. Here it is:

"Also Foucaut's "medical gaze" as a=20
disciplining extension of surveillance technologies. I have seen
Foucauldian analyses, or at least applications, in a number of places
concerning genetic testing. One is in a talk given at the anthro =
meetings
2 (?) years ago by Nancy Press. She discusses (briefly) Foucault's
analyses of surveillance technologies that turn subjects into their own
objects (e.g., women's putative attraction to self-surveillance through
BRCA1/2 testing). Deborah Lufton's book on public health uses a
Foucauldian/Marxist approach. Prenatal genetic screening also can be
looked at through the notion of technologies that discipline the social
body, a notion followed by feminists and folks in the disabilities =
studies
community.

There are also literatures on risk -- the "risk society" -- that look at
the internalization of the concepts of technological and embodied risks
through Foucauldian lenses. Anthony Giddens has a book on risk and
personal health behavior, cant think of the title. You might also be
interested in Zygmunt Bauman's Postmodern Ethics."

matthew.
