I am writing a dissertation entitled Derrida and Foucault: The Stakes of
Madness. While I am not wiring about the practices of drug therapy there are
some useful distinctions that Foucault makes about the changing nature of
psychiatric treatment in Madness and Civilization that might be pertinent and in
particular the chapter "Aspects of Madness". Also of interest is the debate
between Foucault and Derrida and in particular Derrida's essays "Cogito and the
History of Madness" in Writing and Difference and "To Do Justice to Freud: The
History of Madness in the Age of Psychoanalysis" in Resistances of
Psychoanalysis. Derrida counters Foucault's historicising tendencies and makes
some interesting historical claims himself and also touches on a possible
liberatory strand in psychiatry itself.
Aside from Foucault and Derrida R D Laing is also a prominent figure in the
debate about drug treatment in psychiatry. See in particular his biography
Wisdom, Madness and Folly and The Divided Self.
