Pascal's "vile root"

Hi.
Isn't the superiority of human logic and reason a base for the modern
project? I found this quote from Pascal, suggesting that mankind aren't
always perfect.

453. From lust men have found and extracted excellent rules of policy,
morality, and justice; but in reality this vile root of man, this figmentum
malum, is only covered, it is not taken away.

Pensées, by Blaise Pascal (1660, translated by W. F. Trotter).
