Philadelphia Association

The Philadelphia Association was founded in 1965 by R. D. Laing and others who were challenging traditional approaches to mental health. They emphasized the importance of attending to the individual's unique experience within a particular social context. As a consequence, therapeutic community households were set up and the association's training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy was established. The Philadelphia Association's approach is influenced both by psychoanalytic thinking and the work of philosophers from existential and post-phenomenological perspectives.

The Philadelphia Association currently runs the following activities.
-Therapeutic community households (all in London), acting as places of refuge for people suffering from psychological difficulties.
-Psychotherapy, including a small number of low-cost spaces conducted by trainee psychotherapists.
-Training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
