Re: [Foucault-L] translation

Thanks Kevin

From what I can gather Foucault rarely wrote in
English and I think most of the interviews that were published were conducted in French originally. All these were then translated into English for publication.

He wrote the second half of The Subject and Power piece in English and I don't think it is as good as the bit he wrote originally in French.

I'd like to know, as Foucault was very precise with his word usage and it would be good to know what words he was actually using. The word 'self' I have put up in my quote of the month on my site is rendered in French (translation? or not?) as 'être' (being) and I like that better than 'self' in this context.

Hi Clare,

that's an interesting question to which I don't have the answer but another question.

didn't Foucault write out these essays, lectures, etc., in English in the first place, or where they translations of material given in French elsewhere?

Regards,
Kevin.

Subject: [Foucault-L] translation

This is a question about some of the material in Dits et Ecrits which
actually I have been wondering about for a long time.

Some items by Foucault were originally published in English but
appear in Dits et Ecrits in French. Does anybody know whether the
French originals were used or whether they have been translated from
the English publication into French for DE? A number of these items
include the mention 'trad F. Durand-Bogaert'.

The item in particular that I'm thinking of is Sex, Power and the
Politics of Identity' #358 in DE
