Here is a selection I have made from the first chapter of Foucault's Folie et déraison: Histoire de la folie à l'âge classique. In making this selection I have drawn upon both existing English translations, Howards translation of the abridged text and Kalfa's translation of the unabridged text. I have privileged Howards translation over Kalfa's and only relied on the latter to fill in the gaps of the former, except in some rare instances where I have favoured the second translation to the first, but generally only after referring to the French original, so that the result is a hybrid text, an attempt to arrive at an authoritative version which draws upon the best of both. I have also included some material to serve as a introduction to the selection along with a gallery of images. I will add more of the references at a later date.
"Foucault's 'History of Madness' has yet to be read." (Jean Kalfa, from the introduction to his translation of the unabridged text).
