My thanks to Jorge Pedraza for the very interesting excerpt from Foucault
about mirrors and utopias. The last line that is quoted by Pedraza is:
The ship is the heterotopia par excellence. In civilizations without boats,
dreams dry up, espionage takes the place of adventure, and the police take
the place of pirates.
[end quotation from Foucault]
Of course, what this reminds one of is F's discussion of the ship of fools in
_Madness and Civilization_.
