visibilities: a source for rodrigo

to rodrigo:
gary gutting's *Michel Foucault's archaeology of scientific reasoning*
(published by cambridge university, 1989) has a section called "the order
of things" dealing with the ideas of resemblance and representation in
history. a quote from the book :

The idea of a natural "history" takes on a meaning
closer to the original Greek sense of "seeing."
Whereas for the Renaissance, the historian "was
defined not so much by what he saw as by what he
retold, for the Classical Age, history means "a
meticulous examination of things themselves for the
first time, ans then of transcribing what has been
gathered in smooth, neutralized, and faithful
words."

this is not specifically about visibilities, but is about the way
visibilities relate to our reality and knowledge. there is a little about
visions of the insane and van gogh, breugel, and goya as the visual
representation of madness meeting art.

james bernauer's book *Michel Foucault's Force of Flight* (humanities
press, 1990) addresses visual images briefly throughout: page 57-60,
162-16?
actually, this second book is too peripheral, probably no good for your
study. but the first one is good.
