A final note on Karl Carlile

Due to the recent events with Karl Carlile there are certain elements in
the structure of this list that are in the process of changing. In the
past the list has been completely open and as moderator my attitude has
been basically to sit back and watch how things unfold. However, it is
becoming increasingly apperant that such a state is not capable of
producing a viable medium for the production of meaningful discourse.
True enough, that last statment is loaded and highly charged. I mean,
who am I to say what constitutes 'meaningful discourse', or, for that
matter, who am I to impose the necessity of meaningfulness? To these
questions I have no immediate answer, though I am willing to take up
their ramifications with anyone who would find this interesting. Be that
as it may there are certain minimal restictions that I am willing to
impose, even if it is a gratuitous imposition.

It has always been my hope that this list would consitute a space for
theoretical practice, that it would not only be a list about foucault but
it would also be a space where archaeology and geneology could be taken
up and practiced. Throughout my tenure as moderator the list has
approached and receeded form my ideal in various ways, which is only to
be expected in a medium sush as this. From my perspective there is only
one hard and fast rule that applies here and that is that the discourse
is engaged from a certain level of interest. As far as I'm concerned
flame bait is uninteresting, it bores me, and I'm assuming it bores many
others as well. As a result I have unsubbed Karl Carlile from the list
and we have put some mechanisms in place so that he cannot post tot the
list. There's still a couple of bugs to be worked out in the system, but
for the most part we should now be unperterbed by KC.

Having to cull the list in this manner is rather unfortuante and I don't
see it as a long term solution, rather I would like to take it as an
occasion to try and and problematize the medium within which we are
engaged in an attempt to come up with what might be more viable
solutions. Since such a meta-discussion of lists is not everyone's cup
of tea I would invite anyone who is interested to sub to the
list-proposals this. To do this send a message to
majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, leave the subject line blank
and in the body of the text write "sub**ibe list-proposals" (without the
"" and the *'s).
