CRITICAL MANAGEMENT STUDIES CONFERENCE
1999

Refereed Paper Stream

THE MANAGEMENT
OF
EVERYDAY LIFE

FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS

The First International Conference on Critical Management Studies
is to be held at
Hulme Hall, Manchester,
July 14-16
1999

Management has become a daily activity for each and everyone of us.
We manage our money, our time, our diets and even our relationships.
Management has become part of our 'everyday lives'.

This stream invites interested parties to explore the ways in which the
specialist and often technicist discourse and practices associated with the
formal activity of management have come to be incorporated into our
everyday life routines and activities.

Both the terms 'management' and 'everyday' are interpreted broadly and
contributions are welcomed from a wide range of perspectives and subject
areas. The convenors would particularly welcome papers which emerge from
work outside the mainstream of management and business studies and that
engage critically with the following broad issues:

The extent to which managerial discourses of control and technique may be
understood as colonizing aspects of everyday life

The utilization of managerial discourse and techniques in the ongoing
activities of everyday sense-making (e.g. therapy and self-help)

Management technique and the constitution and maintenance of various
dimensions of personal identity (e.g. the body)

In addition to refereed paper streams, it is intended to hold a number of
interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary panels and sessions.

Places are restricted so there will be limited space available for those who
have not submitted papers.

Please submit a 750 word abstract of your proposed paper as soon as
possible and at the latest by 30 September 1998 marking it
'Management of Everyday Life'
