Re: Canon

For a critique of modernity as a Western invention, try _Gharbzadegi_
(loosely translated as "Weststruckness") by the Iranian intellectual Jalal
Al-e Ahmad. If you want something more politically motivated, there is
always Mahatma Gandhi's _Satyagraha_, as well as Frantz Fanon's _The
Wretched of the Earth_ and _Black Skin, White Masks_, and virtually anything
by Edward Said is a must-read for any Foucauldian interested in cultural
studies. These are full-length books.

You might want to look at some of Gadamer's work, particularly some of the
essays in _Philosophical Hermeneutics_. There is also a volume of essays
edited by John Rajchman called _The Identity in Question_.

PS- Tibetan philosophy can be quite canonical to a Tibetan.
