<font size=+2>C</font>hief among the commonplace -- although by no
means insignificant -- maxims of
<i>Wake</i>an scholaship is the insistance that the
text must be read aloud in
order for the reader to appreciate -- if
not understand -- Joyce's most linguistically
playful work. Fortunately, one of the two extant recordings
of Joyce's voice
preserves a reading of the ALP chapter's conclusion.

<p>A sample from this recording
is reproduced here, along with the corresponding text (<i>FW</i> 215.22-216.5).
If you have a 28.8 or faster connection to the Internet and a copy of the RealAudio
player version 3.0 or higher on your system, you can hear Joyce read the entirety of the text
below by clicking on the RealAudio icon. If you're not technically equipped to handle the
RealAudio stream, you can still listen to portions of the text by clicking
on one of the linked sentences below. These links are connected to 8 bit mono .AU files ranging
in size from 30K to 75K; downloading should therefore not be an inordinately
lengthy process.
