Reflecting on this post and the comments of Nate and Clare.
My initial impression is that there is a Gaze that causes the LOVE of
WARFARE (using the term already offered). Perhaps not the LOVE of WARFARE,
but the LOVE of BEING A PART OF SOMETHING as opposed to the FEAR of BEING
APART OF SOMETHING. If that something is evil and devisive and manipulative
it could lead to a LOVE OF WAREFARE.
My interpretation is that medical gaze led people to trust doctors without
question. In a similar way, the gaze of strong leaders can lead people to
trust the strong leaders and want to be part of the insitutions they create.
For example, the gaze of the British Empire, the gaze of popular culture,
and the gaze of Australian pop-republicanism.
