Re: [Foucault-L] History of Governmentality-English Editions?

Macmillan has raised to the challenge.

Dan Bunyard, publishing editor at Macmillan :

""The thirteen volumes within the original French series of Michel Foucault's Lectures at the Collège de France continue to be transcribed, edited and published in France by Seuil. English translations of the works were, until quite recently, published in North America by our sister company Picador USA and in the UK by Allen Lane and Verso. Three volumes have been published thus far - 'Society Must be Defended', 'Abnormal', and 'Hermeneutics of the Subject'. The fourth, 'Psychiatric Power', will be published by Palgrave Macmillan. This volume, as with the remaining nine which will follow it, are to be published globally by us. The expectation will be to release the volumes on a yearly basis over the next ten years, as they are steadily translated from the French. 'Psychiatric Power' will be published in mid-March 2006, with a US release date approximately one month later. A launch event will be taking place in London in mid-April to mark the occasion.

My hope and expectation is that the series, through being published globally by a single firm, will enjoy a future of uniformity, recognized authenticity and regularity, allowing those keen on following it to do so easily and without recourse to a variety of contacts within diverse organizations. Macmillan publishers are delighted to be involved with these landmark publications and our hope is that it will be widely viewed as a positive development for Foucault scholarship worldwide.

As publishing editor for the series I will be more than happy to receive any queries relating to the project as a whole or concerning individual titles. Ciara O'Connor (c.o'connor@xxxxxxxxxxxx), the marketing executive for the series, will likewise be happy to receive any messages relating to the series.

If you should be interested in receiving any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Hello everybody,

since my initial research did not prove to be very fruitful, I thought addressing my question at the list might be a good idea. Are there any approved English translations of "Geschichte der Gouvernementalität" which was quite recently published by Suhrkamp? The two volumes comprise the lectures given at College de France in 1977/78 and 1978/79, respectively. (http://www.suhrkamp.de/titel/titel.cfm?bestellnr=58394)

As far as I know, the German edition was published simultaneously with the French edition, so I'm a bit sceptical of the existence of a complete English edition. On the other hand, I'm well aware that the concept of governmentality has been discussed in the Anglophone world quite some time before it seeded into Germany, that's why I'm suspecting that at least some of the lectures must have been translated into English during the last couple of years.

I'd be grateful for any hints pointing me to specific editions and/or internet resources.

Thanks a lot,

Christian
