Re: [Foucault-L] Foucault and Christ as Cynical philosophers

Relating Ancient Cynicism to the Dada movement could be easily done using
scholarly work on the Cynics, besides Foucault, even though they may not
highlight "Parrhesia" as mode of self subjectivization as F. does.

I am referring to Marie-Odile Goulet-Caze's work (who reconstructs Cynicism
as associated with a Freedom defined as freedom from conventions--and closer
to that of Tyche/Fortune), but especially to scholars like Niehus-Probsting,
Sloterdijk, and Bouveresse (who work with Cynicism and Rationality, and find
in Ancient Cynicism a possible way of reinvigorating an Aufklarung built on
Critique). The work of Michel Onfray(Cynismes) may lend itself best to an
appropriation of Cynicism related to Dada (and/or other movements of
contestation and falsification of reality, art, knowledge, and truth).

The best part of Foucault's work that would be instrumental to such a
rapprochement with Dada (as a mode of living and expressing that contests
meanings and values) is currently in the Parrhesia/Discourse and Truth 1983
Berkeley lectures, especially the lectures on Practices of Parrhesia
(Parrhesia and Community Life; Parrhesia and Public Life; and Parrhesia and
Personal Relationships). Keep in mind that Foucault's approach to Parrhesia
is political and not merely ethical (refer to Parrhesia and the Crisis of
Democratic Institutions lecture); thus the Dada movement's "political"
impetus need to be Nietzschean in focus, i.e., that meanings and values are
instrumental to constructing a political "reality".

For textual references to the Cynics' Askesis and Parrhesia as values
associated with political/conventional contestation, my "the Cynic Way of
Life" (Ancient Philosophy, XXIII, 1, Spring 2003) may be helpful--as a
shortcut to the textual support.

Good luck on this project. I think that a work on Foucault and the Cynics is
also of great importance, but it seems that only the contemporary French
philosophical scene is taking the Cynics seriously today.

What surprises me is that nobody has (as

indeed, why don't you write it? we'll publish it on generation-online.org
