Re: [Foucault-L] applications of Foucault

Claire, good moment...

Sometime in November, 2005, I e-mailed you to help me on my research work on married couples belonging to faith/covenant communities. Specifically, I asked if you know of anyone who had done some work on them. As there was none then, you suggested to ask the mailing-list. I wasn't able to do.

Anyway, I was able to initially work with selected married couples on their exercise of power using Foucault's genealogical analysis. Aim was to bring out "subjugated knowledges"  and offer them as alternative to their prevailing Christian understanding and re-imagination of "Couple Power." While Foucault wrote/talked lengthily of "pastoral power," I thought of embarking on this project where power is exercised by married couples on one-on-one, face-to-face, day in - day out. I was able ot defend my thesis proposal, "COUPLE POWER IN A COMMUNITY OF EQUALITY, MUTUALITY AND RECIPROCITY" in July 2006.

Unfortunately, the research work remained unfinished. After six months into it, I had to set it aside. My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, stage 2 and underwent treatment the next 2 years. But I can say, the experiences we both had provided us materials for reflection/study. She heard a lot of Foucault from me just as the medical procedures from her oncologist and surviving techniques from friends.

I am uncertain whether I still would be able to complete the formal nvestigation. What I am certain, it's gonna be a "thesis of life" with my wife.It may appear "subjugated" in the process. In the end, liberating and worth sharing.

But who knows? Foucauld has shown ways to look into the possibilties of thiking differently about the present.

Many thanks and warm regards.

I asked this question of the list a while ago but only got a couple
of responses so thought I would try again.

I am looking for examples of investigations that have been prompted
by throw away remarks in Foucault's work. Ideas which Foucault only
mentioned briefly in passing that people have taken up as a
springboard  for extensive studies.

Actually, come to think of it, Edward Said's work Orientalism is
probably one such work - from a very brief comment in the
introduction to The History of Madness.
