i agree that the "big bang" model reappropriates the style or the
sensibility of what you have called premodern. interesting that the scale
of "the spiritual" or "the whole" keeps increasing. how humble. One word
in your reply is key: the clock's "seeming" stability. Given that models
and sensibilities can contract or expand and settle on any "level" of
patterns or wholes or seeming stabilities, perhaps the modern sensibility
is one stuck at the scale of eye level, of "everyday" experience and
vision, where one can "get away with" believing in seeming stability.
