Perhaps one or more of the participants in the Foucault list could clear =
up a muddy issue for me. In "The Subject and Power," the afterword to =
Dreyfus and Rabinow, _Beyond Structuralism and Hermeneutics_ (2nd =
ed.,1983), p. 223, Foucault lays out five areas of investigation for an =
analysis of power relations. My question concerns the third and fourth =
points: "The means of bringing power relations into being," vs. "Forms =
of institutionalization." Foucault's description doesn't clarify the =
difference between the two, at least in my reading. For example, he =
cites "systems of surveillance" as an example of *means*, but that would =
(to my mind) fall into the *institutionalization* category.

Can someone clear up for me what Foucault means by these third and =
fourth categories, and how they differ from each other?

Thank you.

Peace,
