I don't have all the details at hand at the moment. So . . . . my best
approximation:

Chris Connery of Santa Cruz organized a conference on the topic, "Left
Conservatism," Jan 8, 1998. The Nation published an article shortly
thereafter charging those who believe there is such a thing as 'Left
Conservatism,' or that the term is useful for discussion, with being
nihilists, elitists, Foucauldians, etc. (Katha Pollitt also weighed in
against the conference on email circuits.) In sum, charges similar to those
leveled by Cheney--and against the same 'theoretical' folks. The results of
the conference, including I think, the debates themselves, were published
electronically by Thomas Dumm in Theory & Event (an electronic Political
Science journal published by The Johns Hopkins University Press) and
available, I believe, through MUSE. boundary 2, which I edit, also
published a series of papers on this topic in 26, 3, fall 1999 with essays
by Wahneema Lubiano, Bruce Robbins, Wendy Brown, John Beverley, William
Connolly, and Thomas Dumm.

My point is simple: The Nation has said things against Foucauldians in
general--in this case, Butler and Bove in particular--that Cheney says
against the same 'kinds of people.' Some could accuse The Nation of being
opportunist in looking for its allies.

I can't seem the article to which you are referring above, but am very
interested. Could you point me to it directly, or summarize to the list?

Thanks, leigh
