the archive is not mentioned or discussed as such in The Order of Things, it is discussed and defined in the Archeology of Knowledge ch.3, sect 5, pp.170-172 in the French text
The point has nothing to do with internal or external; the point is that the archive is not simply the set of documents, but a dynamic collection showing what is present in an discursive formation and what is not or cannot be present.
