CALL FOR PAPERS
FOR THE SOCIETY’S MEETING TO BE HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH
The Eastern APA (American Philosophical Association) in 2006
The SSPP invites papers for two conference panels. We are seeking papers that address issues pertaining to:
Religion and Politics Revisited
Western liberalism was founded in part on the removal of religion from the public sphere for the purpose of both domesticating and depoliticizing it. But throughout the modern era religion has repeatedly erupted into public life. Global trends such as the increasing influence of martyrdom and the expansion of trans-national missionary practices have mobilized religious fundamentalisms in the service of political ends. Yet these religious movements, though typically reactionary in their social agendas, often harbor powerful critiques of modernity and the state. In light of the complicated relation that religious movements have had, and continue to have, vis-à-vis the secular state system, there is a need to revisit religious practices and to evaluate them not only in terms of their reactionary principles but in terms of their critical potential as well. Possible topics include: religion and trans-national communities, fundamentalism and violence, religion and globalization, and progressive theoretical engagements with religious writings.
Complete papers of 3000-5000 words (that can be summarized and presented in 20-30 minutes) should be submitted for consideration for the 2006 meeting (deadline: March 1, 2006). The meeting will be scheduled for December 27-30, 2006 in Washington, D.C.
Authors should include their name(s) and contact information on the cover page ONLY.
Papers should be emailed as attachments in Word or RTF format to papers@xxxxxxx,

CALL FOR PAPERS
FOR THE SOCIETY’S MEETINGS TO BE HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH
SPEP (Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy) in 2006
The SSPP invites papers for two conference panels. We are seeking papers that address issues pertaining to:
Rethinking Democracy
As a political project, or ideal, democracy is often considered to be beyond criticism or questioning. This elevation of the concept or word “democracy” to a universal ideal, universal in that all political projects, liberal, anarchist, populist, Marxist, feminist, etc. claim to be the true means to realizing this ideal, is coupled with a crisis in terms of “actually existing” democracy. Democracy is threatened internally by the perfection of tools of marketing, which reduce the politics of democracy to the business of advertising, while at the same time democracy is threatened externally, outside of the state, by global politics that reduce national governments and their constituencies to relative powerlessness. In light of this gap between the ideal and reality of democracy, there is a need to rethink democracy in terms of both its concepts and its practices. Possible topics include: democracy and globalization, democracy and anarchism, democracy and “the society of the spectacle,” populism, neo-conservative movements, democracy and race, and forms of democracy yet to come.
Complete papers of 3000-5000 words (that can be summarized and presented in 20-30 minutes) should be submitted for consideration for the 2006 meeting (deadline: March 1, 2006). The meeting will be scheduled for late October/early November 2006, in Philadelphia.
Authors should include their name(s) and contact information on the cover page ONLY.
Papers should be emailed as attachments in Word or RTF format to papers@xxxxxxx.
